Sam Love plays "Подмосковные вечера" ("Moscow Nights") on ukulele

The first of what I'm sure will be many foreign language Helvetica Ukulele Explosion videos!

Bet you didn't know I played balalaika in college (unless you've seen the photo on our channel, the second one down on the right hand side). I also minored in Russian-- a language that I love, but have not used at all in the 3 years since I completed those courses. Therefore, my pronunciation of some words in this song is definitely a little iffy.

"Подмосковные вечера" won the international song contest at the World Festival of Youth and Students in 1957 and since then has become one of the most well-known and beloved Russian songs. The title literally translates to something like "Evening Around Moscow," ("Podmoskovye" being the suburbs of Moscow) but is most commonly known as "Moscow Nights" or "Midnight in Moscow" to the English speaking world.

Here is an English translation:
