An interpretation by Antonio LaMotta, founder of Shinobi Kai Kenjutsu. Copyright 1994. Practically, if you make your students strap the armors on from morning to evening and under any conditions, they will grow thirsty for techniques and hungry for philosophy in no time. In this way, they will follow the techniques and not just watch them for years. I know that most kenjutsuists are lost - watching the awesome finger that's pointing the correct direction for them to follow (and missing all the glory of the path). They need to turn around and tread on the way instead, one step at a time.
You can't think in a duel, you will die. You must hone your correct reflexes by practicing in real time - and you must practice all techniques to be fluently adapted to them.
You must refrain from speed and power from the start - and practice with control and accuracy from the beginning. You will actually master the art of kenjutsu faster in this way.

(Before someone can strike you they practically have to step first. This initial step is your first target, cut through that leg (one handed) and his strike will crumble in mid-air. In case this was a fake and your strike was early, continue your momentum and cut his arms off, you will be right on time. Never parry at the blade in this case ( it will be a waste of time) - he will just re-strike. If your fighting multiple opponents this is a terrible mistake).
Wake-up people!
...KENJUTSU: In any sporting event - including martial arts, the competitors are basically equally matched ( they are both capable of winning within a given set of rules) - or otherwise would be a mismatched bout. In kenjutsu, you are gathering the knowlege on how to win against any impossible odds ( this is my interpretation of Musashi's words)...antonio lamotta

...in my philosophy: the Pen, the Sword or the Tounge (Voice) are all of the same soul. Not one can be mightier than the others. They are meerly the lashing weapons in your hands guided by the same soul. Show me how good you are with one - and I'll show you how good you can be with the others.....antonio lamotta
