The similarities between the NY style salsa and the Street ON-1 style (free, club, LA) are as follow:

1. Both start by stepping forward on 1 - the 1st beat of the music
2. Both include two steps forward and two steps backward
3. Both are executed on the 1st, 2nd, & the 3rd beat
4. Both hold on the 4th and the 8th beat
As you will learn in the forth clip, this difference - the breaking on 2 - is actually marginal when dancing NY style but very central when dancing ON-2. And as you will learn in the forth clip, which portray the difference between the NY style and the ON-2 style, breaking on 2 is not equivalent to dancing on 2

  • Hey Zack!

What is the difference between 'Breaking' & 'Starting'? When they say On2 starts with first beat of 8, breaks on 2nd, ends at 3rd and rest at 4th for one of the two measures, I understand 'Breaking' is the edge of a momentum. Just after it the momentum takes reverse course. 3rd is backdoor & 4th (pause) is the preparation to start the other measure on 5th. 6th breaks the momentum again for forward action. This is the salsa cycle for On2. On1 starts and breaks the momentum on 1st.

  • If I read correctly, then yes, you are correct.

Both dances, the NY Style and the LA style start on one and their counting is 1,2,3, hold.

The difference is that the LA style l break on 1 and the MY style break on 2.

The palladium style start on 2 and break on 2. The counting is 2,3,4,hold. The 1st measure is not exist with the palladium style. The palladium style is a truly an on 2 dance.

  • I think your title "New York Style Myth" is unnecessary, provocative and offensive. You are not exposing any "myths" about New York Style. Even you admitted that New York Style is unique in your video. It starts on 1, breaks on 2. How is that a myth? Because you think it should be called "On1" instead of "On2"? That is just your opinion.

  • Based on my analysis and the definition of "Myth", I don't see any discrepancies.

Your reply to my detailed analysis fits to a sentence. Therefore your reply can be define as just an opinion, not mine.

"Unnecessary" -- false. It was necessary to attract attention. "Provocative" - naturally. After all I am swimming against the stream. "Offensive" -- not my fault. People feel offended when they encounter untraditional ideas that are the opposite of what they believe

  • As for your comments about breaking being an "irrelevant" difference, this comment is actually false because breaking is sometimes important. Female prepping for multiple right hand turns is one example where breaking On1 is not optimal for the woman. (See my full comments on your first video for other advantages of NY On2)

  • You are taking this word out of context. The topic is who dance on 2, not who spin better.

  • Just cut to the chase...

this is what will explain it all: 3:56

  • wow this is an excelent analysis man.. this vid is a definitely "added to my favs" keep it up

  • thanks for Zack for this excellent educational video. There is a general confusion around this topic. I think the reason for that is that people understand different things by the notion of "breaking on" - I think Zack got the point here: he is defining what he means by breaking on and what by dancing on. good job

  • Leader start stepping forward and ladies step backward with all ballroom dances including many Latin dances. Based on your assumption, all these guys have bad manners for generations. Your explanation is just an example of how myth evolves.

The real story behind this is bad leading. It was an easy choice for teachers to minimize the chance that students, who are naturally inexperienced leaders, would step on the girls when they start their first salsa step.
