The abuse of the Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers moved this filmmaker to reexamine his own memories of working at a New York State Mental Hospital in the early 1970's. For all the scandalous imagery involved the filmmaker ends by assuring the viewer that such abuses can be diminished by two important measures, now practiced in the New York State Psychiatric Centers.

  • it is so true what you say here about reporting abuse. i have a similar story to yours,.in the state of nj they have been making the transformation making people with mental illness and disabilities live out of institutionlized settings such as mental hospitals. they now have more rights than ever before, however the abuse still happens, even with policies protecting the rights of these individuals. its great to have videos like this to make people aware, and to educate them a bit more.

  • Keep sharing the truth and maybe we can affect the future.

    Thanks for your response.

  • Magnificent, I am overjoyed to knwo that there are other humans that think ona high enough level to organize their words so well as to be influential like yourself. You've made the right choices during your working at the institute. I applaude you ingenuity and I sponsor it with my own rraise, keep on believing in what's right.

  • I especially appreciate the encouragement from folks like yourself who have been affected by this heartfelt story.

  • Things haven't changed at all. They're forcing electroshock on 100,000-200,000 Americans a year, mostly old women and children. Judge Rotenberg Center used electric shock on mentally disabled children, killed six already, still open, getting $56million ayear from st/fed govt. to torture children. Nothing's changed.

  • Thank you for this information. I haven't done indepth research but I have found some reference to what you have addressed. The numbers may need some more verification but even if it's a tenth of this it would be too much. I worked in a NYS mental institution in 1973 and in 1992 and I can definitely say that things have changed. More is needed.

  • Thanks for being outspoken! Only wish more individuals could and would speak out. It is hard being heard as a mental health patient and to be believed.

  • this is so accurate... they like to slam you down to the floor if you don't do what they tell you to and keep you locked in seclusion.

I am glad to hear this from someone who has worked in a mental hospital... and nothing has changed.

    Thanks!

  • i was a patient in a few mental hospitals. its good to hear this comming from an employee. you speak the truth. . .

  • in that case, you're welcome :)
