Located south of Los Alamos on the pajarito Plateau, Bandelier overlooks the Rio Grande River. Interpreter Rod Torrez explains volcanic eruptions more than a million years ago created the Jemez Mountains. Ash settling on the eastern flank of the mountains solidified into a solid skirt known as Bandelier Tuff - a formation 900 feet thick that eventually formed the Pajarito Plateau.
