Oslo, Royal Palace 12:00 pm: His Majesty King's Guard is a battalion of the Norwegian Army and has two main roles to play. First it serves as the Norwegian King's bodyguards, guarding the royal residences as the Royal Palace as well as Akershus Fortress in Oslo, and second it is also the main infantry unit, in worst case, responsible for the defence of the Norwegian Capital.
The Kings Guard is under the direct command of the King of Norway.
The norwegian King's Guard was founded in 1856, when King Oscar I decided to establish a Royal Norwegian guard to underline his position as monarch of both Sweden and Norway. On Norway's independence in 1905, the company became the new guards unit for the King of Norway, Haakon VII.
During the Second World War, the Gurad prevented the german Wehrmacht from capturing the Royal Family and the also the Cabinet. This gave the Guard its first battle honour. Later the Guard fought in different battles in central Norway were they known among the German soldiers as "the black devils", due to their dark uniforms.

  • I wanted to thank you for this video - really instructive. I learned a lot! I loved the history behind it. It's a shame Germany has no Royals anymore - I really love the Hohenzollerns, the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas and the Wittelsbaschs :(

Anyways, long live Norway! Long live the King of Norway!
