@berner Are you sure you don't mean the PCV valve? All of the EGR valves I have seen so far have been pretty much like this one. The PCV valve you can just pop out and replace.
I own a '98 Chev Malibu, 3.1 and chaning mine out is easier than changing a sparkplug.
If you want your kid to feel accomplished if he wants to help daddy work on the car, but you don't want him doing anything too complex/dangerous, start him off with the EGR valve
