@texrocksify yeah, true that, Bum was an icon.. I'm generally an NFC guy, i prefer outdoor, cold-weather, ground game style football.. but i always had love for the Oilers, bcuz they brought (and personified) the AFC game, (something different).. wide open, cowboy hats in the stands @ the dome, sunbelt market, etc. I miss their presence in the league, they were cool, & imo. the Oilers-turned-Titans are lame, they have no identity. peace

If I were to pick the most special team in Houston sports history excluding the two Rockets championship teams in 94,95. It would be a tie between the 1979 Oilers, the Cinderella 1981 Rockets, and of course Phi Slama Jama 1983. Vernon Perry personified that Oilers team making big plays in every playoff game he played in: Made the game winning deflection vs Denver (wc 79), 4 ints & blocked FG in SD (div 79), int for TD in Pitt (afcc 79), int in end zone in Oakland (wc 80)

Do the 1979 Houston Oilers have a "Missing Ring" episode on NFL Network

Thanks for the memories.

@kcthatsawinner I dont agree with your statement that Steeler nation thought Bum was a bad guy. There was no bitterness towards him from Steelers fans. His hat got stolen but that was an isolated incident.

John Facenda is correct. The Houston-Pittsburgh rivalry was friendly, compared to the bad blood today's Steelers had with today's divisional rivals, the Ravens, Browns and Bengals. The Steeler Nation thought Bum was a bad guy, but the Steelers and Oilers had a friendly rivalry unlike today's Cincy-Pitt rivalry, which was called 'Nasty' by Sports Illustrated. I even recall Oilers tight end Mike Barber do a commercial with a Steeler for Hills, a now-defunct department store chain in our area!

Perpetual> This was before Cody Carlson's time. #14 was Gifford Nielson. The difference between this era and Cody Carlson and Warren Moons era was the late 70's were a bunch of OVERACHIEVERS, the late 80's and early 90's era were a bunch of UNDERACHIEVERS!!
oilers > texans

@wpruitt30 1000% agree. They should never have left AND/OR should have left Oilers name/ uniforms for Houston.
