Three Ways of Heat Transfer by Anthony Tamilio

The hip-hop song written and performed by Anthony Tmilio, a student who took Scientific Inquiry in the Spring of 2009. He reflected upon the three ways that heat transfers by way of the popular music form of hip hop. We not only see that scientific learning can take place well blended with pop culture, but also that the scope of hip hop music can be widened to impact education and science.

Now the first way of transportation
Of heat energy is radiation
Like sound waves from your local station
Filling up the emptiness in open spaces
Your Radiator can heat up a room
But it cant give you a tan too

The Sun Radiates at a rate
From 93 Million Miles away
The earth takes the heat and re radiates
It up into the sky is where the heat takes

Conduction is the second method on my list
You can feel it like a hot pot on your fist
With the handle gripped
Or a candle lit
Its heat through conduction that causes this
Atoms in matter vibrate in a position
When they are heated like a pan up in the kitchen
They transmit the heat to atoms next to them
That are cooler to cause equilibrium
To tie up the score the heat has to move
Like the heat from the coffee on your spoon
It might burn your hand
But you will learn the land
Of conduction until you understand

Convection moves the heat in liquids and gases
To even out the temperature the fastest
This process is called diffusion
Its the flow of hot and cold up in a fluid
If your not listening, stop what your doing
This is the final way that heat can move in
It affects you every day
Its the breeze at your back and the way the wind blows up in your face
When heat reaches the earth, it rises at a rate
With the air in place, with air in the place
And moves up till it cools
Lots of molecules
Make up the weather that we see on the news
Its how they measure the pressure
Of the air and the temperature
But convection is
how it got there
In the atmosphere
so dont be scared
You have it over there,
The three ways of heat transfer!
