One of the finest blues recordings ever (Chicago, April 23, 1941). Written by Joe McCoy (based on his 1936 Weed Smoker's Dream). Lil Green (vocal), Big Bill Broonzy (guitar), Simeon Henry (piano), Ransom Knowling (bass). Peggy Lee with Benny Goodman made a pop hit out of it in 1943. Numerously covered and sampled ever since.

  • Considering when it came out, that's some damn fine audio quality. Whoever remastered it must've spent quite some time on it.

  • I first heard this song by Lil Green for allmost 30 years ago, got it on tape but it got lost. Now i've found it again! Thanks for posting this. This is much better than Peggy Lee's version.

  • I can feel the sadness... And I say It's awesome.

  • Peggy Lee is good, but her version is too jazzy. Much prefer a bluesy rendition. And you can't sing the blues unless you've been there. Thank you so much for sharing!!

  • 10x better than Peggy Lee and benny goodman's cracker ass cover

  • The guitar is played by Big Bill Brunzie whose parents were slaves.

  • I can see the smoke filled Juke Joint can't you?

  • sriski: Just like Little Wiilie John singing Fever!

  • Awesome song... :)

  • Wow nice copy!

  • love her.
