In the report I co-authored "Global Warming Mitigation by Reduction of Outgoing Longwave Radiation Through Large-Scale Surface Albedo Enhancement of Deserts Using White Plastic Polyethylene Film-the Global Albedo Enhancement Project (GAEP)," the use of robotic vacuum cleaners to maintain surface reflectivity is discussed.

This video, produced April 12, 2003, explains how robotic vacuum cleaners could be used for this purpose. The performance of the commercially available Roomba vacuum cleaner from the iRobot Corp. in removing particulate matter from a plastic cover was evaluated in order to identify some of the factors that would need to be addressed in designing "GeoVacs" for a desert cover project.
