WASHINGTON, DC, Oct. 18, 2007 - His Holiness the Dalai Lama spoke to a capacity audience of 300 in Washington, DC, a day after receiving the Congressional Gold Medal, the U.S. Congress' highest civilian honor.

The Dalai Lama addressed the September 2007 crackdown on dissent in Burma, and issued a global call to action on climate change. Richard C. Holbrooke, Chairman of the Asia Society and former US Ambassador to the United Nations; Strobe Talbott, President of the Brookings Institution and former Deputy Secretary of State; and Richard Armitage, former Deputy Secretary of State, also participated in the discussion.
