If you have climbed outside before you may want to give this a skip. You will not get the 25 minutes of your life back. You have been warned!

This video is for those who are stepping outside for the very first time. The transition can be a little scary. Don't be intimidated by the stupid rock jocks you have as much right as they do to be out there. The other person your going to run into a lot is the guy/gal who just won't shut up. It doesn't take long to figure out that they really don't know that much but that doesn't stop them from telling everybody at the crag what little they do know. Then there is the accident waiting to happen. This guy/gal is doing everything wrong and is teaching there friend how to do everything wrong. Even better they are climbing right beside you and you can see that you are about to deal with a high trauma accident. Unless your as confident as Mike Barter it is pretty hard to step in and point out the error of their ways. I once met a couple of real life brain surgeons (this is absolutely true) belaying off of their gear loops! So I guess education is a poor way of measuring intelligence.
The thing is 98% of this is just plain old common sense. Be progressive you'll learn.
These are links to some common methods of dealing with anchors and a few tips on building anchors.

Here mountain guide and public safety specialist for Parks Canada deals with a common anchor set up in Spain. Often there are preset links that you can drape your rope into. Watch how she deals with it.

Mike Barter shows how to deal with those stations that just have chain links. Meaning you can't push a bite of rope through. You will actually have to untie from the rope and feed the end through.

Mike doing the same thing again but slightly diffrent. The first one is a bit better.

Now Mike gives his thoughts on anchors and the type of anchors he uses and when he uses them. This is pretty in depth and long but if you absorb this your way ahaed of the game.

Few thoughts on natural gear and how it can be used for protection and anchors.
