@64AF Hi there, I worked at PetSmart grooming salon for over a year. yes we are trained. And if we ever need help with a dog another groomer is always there to help. I cannot speak for every petsmart employee but i know the two stores in my area have great groomers! :)

@gil4real82 I commend you for doing your own research but did they not train you to trim nails at PetSmart?...this makes me nervous. I used to take my dog there to have her nails trimmed. Are they not training their employees?

At the shop I've been working at for almost 2 years, we are taught to take just a smidge off of the nail with each clip, at a different angle each time so that you approach the quick from around the nail, instead of chomping right down on it. You also quick them much more superficially. After trimming hundreds of dogs' nails, I only quick a dog maybe 1 in 10 dogs if that. I have found that to be the most effective way - over taking a blind guess at where the quick is especially on black nails.

This is great! I'm taking an online dog-grooming program, and this is an excellent supplement to the study guide!
Do you know what type of dog Sierra is? She looks EXACTLY like our dog and we don't know what he is.
Thanks!

@StaticElektrik I checked with the owner and they got Sierra at the pound. We just don't know, sorry!

FINALLY! My dogs both have black nails and I can never trim them short enough. Now I know how! Thank you, thank you! Any tips on filing after clipping?

@aprilfresh1971 Dremeling is great! Works better than a file, and its fast, but if you have long hair, put it up first:)
