Neither of the parents were ever taken out after they spawned. When the fry became free-swimming and distributed throughout the tank, even though they were bite-size tasty morsels, the female (and male) still left them alone. They were more interested in the blackworms I feed them. So, what we have here is a nice big family.

Note: There are variations in each specimen as well as within different species. What worked for me may not be the same for you, but give it a try.
