  • Dont know what happened to Miss Masterson's top Cs! How can one sing notes like that in public - or was this a rehearsal?

  • This was a telecast performance.

To the best of my knowledge there are B's in this piece not C's.

This trio comes at the very end of the opera and it is extremely difficult for the soprano. I have seen several sopranos come to grief with the high notes here. i would not be surprised if this is what happened here.

  • @tenore23 I believe there is a high D at the end of the trio that should be there. God those poor sopranos... imagine singing the entire opera and then have to perform this with everything you have! Great production though!

  • @Engenue You know? You statement sent me right to IMSLP to check the complete score and while they are hardly the last word on accuracy, there is no D on the final trio. The written note is a B and the last section is actually written an octave lower.

  • @tenore23 Ahhh you're right! Just checked my score... I think I assumed because I did hear a version somewhere on here where the soprano hits a high D# for some reason or another. Thanks for checking that :)

  • @monpitt500 I think he's quite good. And his acting during the end is much better than some Mephistophles.

  • Horrible Mephisto!!!

  • the Cds done havethis problem

    of bad top notes

  • I sang Faust with Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez in Detroit. She was young, and it was all beautiful (natural voice) but she actually screemed the last note while thinking she was singing. I think every soprano fears the last note.

  • I guess you are right. I was probably just disappointed having experienced such wonderful performances with her in London earky 80's.

  • Everyone has their bad days, and singers have to sing even when they aren't feeling at their 100% :(

  • Indeed - the trio is a tough sing for a any lyric soprano, and at 48, I fear Ms Masterso's stamina had run out on the high Bs.
