This is a clip from a videotape that will allow *you* to become a better bowler by studying the movements associated with perfect bowling. It's also a bizarre thing to watch.

  • Increasing weight in the center of the ball isn't technology. Bowling cheats were doing that since the thirties with lead or mercury. The coverstock also isn't technology as urethane (and adding resins) could've been used in the late fifties had the ABC allowed it. The idea that a bowler's armswing is akin to one shooting pool is not accurate in many areas like the bowler is walking forward, not stationary; the billiard player moves the cue at the waist, not the ankle just to state a few. :)

  • @20alphabet That was good form for the technology, but with today's lanes you need to be able to get the ball going right quickly later in a block. Dropping the shoulder gets the ball in line with your head. This increases leverage allowing you to get the ball back when you are forced to open up your angles. It allows your shoulders to open more and get the ball going right faster.

To be sure though, square shoulders were indeed perfect back then, and that was a slight flaw in his game.

  • @gamemeister27 Not at all. Dipping the shoulder (bad form) hasn't evolved into good form. There's no evolution to dipping the shoulder over years. Watch Don Johnson, Barry Asher, or Mike Durbin for examples of good form. Typically it's a left-handers flaw... like tugging, Mike Aulby being an exception. I know at your age you feel you have a grasp of the game, but once upon a time only by perfecting technique was pinfall increased.

  • @20alphabet Turns out the shoulder dip was actually an evolution of bowling technique of his time. Now all the best players drop it somewhat...well most, not sure about ALL.

  • Where is the one with Marshall?

  • Johnny Petraglia's a class act. He admits to dipping his shoulder too much. Last time I saw him bowl he looked like he remedied that. Really a great guy from the era of sportsmanlike conduct, as opposed to todays crop of rodeo clowns.

  • Watching this is like staring into infinity. Toward the end you get the feeling that infinity is staring back. It's a good thing it's only five minutes long; I don't think I could bring myself to stop the video if I had to.

  • @DaCaptain924 - couldn't agree more. Anyone could benefit from that kind of impeccable timing and solidity at the foul line. You don't really see that kind of grace in today's game anymore - it seems most bowlers today are more concerned with rev rate, speed, and power.

  • watch Johnny's release, no grab at the bottom whatsoever, one sweet bowler, loved him since I was a kid
