You can share your internet connection to other devices. For example, you can use your ethernet cable and then create a wireless network (no need of routers or modems) which other devices can join.
Following situation: You're connected via ethernet, and you need wifi on your iPod Touch! How can you do this? It's very simple, just follow the step in the tutorial. (made on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard).
Or, you can surf the web with many computers connected on 1 wifi network which uses just one ethernet cable. Again, no wireless router and moden needed, the laptop does this.
