hmm different way of doing it. you should have cut out the object, in this case the mans body. instead of just paiting in black around the object on the same layer. keeping your objects and fill layers seperate gives you endless control. you were limiting yourself here. but the video is old, im sure you have many new techniques

To paint the black, why didn't he just make a selection of the white and fill it with black, and then used "refine edge"???

You did the things manually, it's not wrong, but harder to do in that way, anyways, i loved the final result.
