  • Regarding cutting keyways in shafts. If you need to cut keyways for half-moon keys you will have to buy a keyway cutter. If you only want to cut a parallel keyway it is possible to improvise if you only need to do a one-off. The improvised method involves using the lathe as a shaper and mowing the saddle with the hand-wheel. It is also possible to grind keyways using a Dremel type grinder. Don't forget that in the old days keyways were cut by hand using a special chisel and a hammer!

  • @techdavey1000 VERY good ideas. tubalcain

  • I want to buy a lathe but I do not know what all I need to buy, some have told me I need all kinds of extras, like steady rest, a follower rest a 4 jaw chuck and so on, have been looking at a 7X 14 mini lathe any were from 600.00 USD plus shipping to $5000.00 plus shipping, but that one has the milling machine on it as well, witch I also want to get and learn, as I build many things and need to cut key ways for hydraulic pump drives or sprockets. Any ideas?

  • @arnoldcustom To start with all you need is---- drill chuck, 3 jaw chuck 4 jaw chuck, headstock & tailstock centers, tool post & tool holders, cut off tool, cutting tools.

  • @arnoldcustom vGrind your own tools as shown in my lathe tool videos.

  • Dear Sir, have you thought about talking with a professional filming company and maybe make a DVD series, filmed in HD and all that? I'd definitely buy each and every DVD of the series!

  • @aryesegal1988 I will have DVDs for sale next week.

  • but the tool bits he made for me out of tool stock will no longer cut, and I cannot find any shop to fix them or make me more new ones, not even a machine shop will do it, I thing it is because they want the work, and by not doing it for me, forces me to take them all my work.

Now that I am retired I want to do it all, I have lot of brass round stock of many sizes.

    Thanks very much

    Arnold
