Punchin' Judy

Finally unearthed after a decade! This silent film marks the first collaboration between Messieurs Ireland and Berks, the duo who would later become Eyeconoclast Films. The story and production of this film laid the groundwork for the Eyeconoclast Films aesthetic: dark/ironic humor, surrealism and a fusion of the antique and the modern.

HISTORY: This project was shot for a film production class exercise, on 16mm reversal stock using a Cinema Products CP-16 GSMO camera. The original exercise called for several groups to share a single reel of film on which they would tell a story in a scene of their own creation. Not content with shooting a single scene as had the other groups, Mr. Ireland, Mr. Berks and Ms. Her decided to take the exercise beyond its limitations. The group employed a technique known as 'in-camera editing' so they could tell a story in multiple scenes on a single reel. Though the footage was processed, the project was never viewed in class and after leaving college, the reel went missing.

After its rediscovery in 2010, the previously unnamed project was transferred to video where its creators could finally view it for the first time. In order to conform it to the Eyeconoclast Films aesthetic and to enhance the viewing experience, it was given minimal editing, a music track and a set of intertitles.
