James Kalm ventures to the peripheries of Williamsburg to bring viewers this double report from the cultural frontiers. Judith Supine, the well regarded street artist provocateur debuts his talents with "Dirt Mansion" at English Kills Gallery. Combining a 1960s psychedelic feel with punk street action, Supine creates a hallucinatory environment melding images from classic sources with Dadaist bravado. "A Roller Coaster In The Dark", curated by Ben La Rocco, at Galleria Janet Kurnatowski, presents a group of artists working with formalist abstract principals in unexpected and unique ways. Exhibition includes Mara Held, Mel Kendrick, Cordy Ryman, Joan Waltemath and Mark Williams

  • This question is for James or anyone else checking out this video who might know. There was a sculptor who was really popular in the 80s. He still might be for all I know but he seemed to get a lot of press in the 80s. He made sculptures with rabbits. I seem to recall his last name sounded Irish- like Flannery or something like that. Does anyone know the name of the person I'm thinking of?

  • Barry Flanagan, shows at Waddington Galleries, London, Paul Kasmin New York,

    JK

  • The guys installing "Dirt Mansion" were totally under the gun to get things done. They had 40 minutes to make the show. I thought it was interesting to see how things work when the pressure's on.

By the way I'm using a Canon Power Shot SD 750 Digital Elph.

  • every time i see this guy cordy rymans work I get the feeling like he has never left grad school. he seems to have been ridding on his fathers shirt tail for too long. my advice get out of new york dont befriend any artist dont take money from daddy stop making what you call art and become a plumber. after 2-3 years show somthing you belive in and then maybe I will believe in you. good luck

  • well...4 out of the 6 artists i mentioned are 'based' in texas......vernon fishers work is informed heavily by texas, he was my teacher and a fantastic artist.

  • Thanks James, G J show interested us here!

  • the orchard keeper:)

  • "From" being the operative word. Cormac McCarthy -- one of my favorite authors -- lives in a motel in El Paso. And it shows. Where else in the world would one use perfectly good fingers as fish bait not knowing whether you were going to attract a catfish or a water moccasin? But, you are right -- this flavor of chutzpah may produce great art in addition to the Texas Syndicate. God bless them.

  • i must stand up for texas a little here....artists from texas: robert rauschenberg, vernon fisher, julian schnabel, aaron parazette, jeff elrod, trenton-doyle hancock, steven charles and all the others i'm forgetting. Dallas, Austin and Houston are pretty vibrant art communities full of ambitious folks.

  • I would have cheered giving the ladder a kick. Roller Coaster is great -- a lot of pieces that I wish I had done. Texan art lovers?!? Those old boys drive their Winnebagos out to watering spots, sprinkle corn and shoot hogs while sitting in aluminum lawn chairs on the roof and trying to get someone to pull their finger. And that is just our Commander in Chief.

  • And thanks to you as well seniartinfo. That's exactly who I was thinking of.

  • Thanks James. I knew you would know!

  • Hi asdffd . i think Barry Flanagan
