Simply the greatest voice ever recorded.

@skitzo429 JS could (and earlier did) sing it in the original key. She refused to force her voice, thus transpositions. It kept her career going longer than any soprano who didn't have the good sense to do the same. Regardless of what the critics said, Sutherland had 40 years of excellent singing that proved she must have been doing something right!
Hooray for La Stupenda!

MEZZO Y SOPRANO....FANTASTICA

so skitzo, by your reckoning (oh how stupidly self-righteous you are!), Maria Malibran should never have sung Casta Diva (she transposed down two tones), Caruso should never have sung Trovatore (he transposed the Pira a half-step), Pavarotti should not have sung Che gelida when she started transposing a half-step, Ponselle never should have sung Norma at all, since she transposed throughout, Callas either, since she sang Casta Diva in F. Why not just stop posting where Sutherland is concerned?

she didnt sing it to sound like a mezzo, she did it because she was REALLY old.

I would rather have a singer who can sing things in the right key
-
@Richiesutherland WEll you would know what keys she sang them in.. wouldn't you?

A little history. Art of the Prima Donna: she sings the aria in A, with a high E at the end. In all stage performances and concerts in her prime years, such as this one, she sang the aria in Ab. In the Met Gala, she sings the aria both up and down! The first section is in A again, higher than usual. The second section transposes to Gb. As great a fan of hers as I am, I don't think that version really worked. But I wasn't the one singing the aria, so who cares what I think!

Joan Sutherland transposed this aria even during her peak period so that the aria sounds a bit dark. At the MET gala even lower so she sounded like mezzo. Still she was a Stupenda.
Please. Give me a singer with these problems any day! The void left by this singer is incidentally populated with any number of also rans.

The size of the top notes stands out.....a pretty dramatic rendering. Brava.
