Backhoe configuration is what your looking at right here, also called a "Mass excavator". A Front shovel configuration has the bucket facing the opposite way. The idea is two different digging setups. A hoe normally will sit ontop of a lift and load trucks from above, what you call "bench loading". A shovel sits on the same level as a truck and digs into the lift.
