Hello, it's Wednesday, March 5, 2008. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk today with your UPI top news update.

Hillary Clinton is celebrating big wins from last night's election. Clinton won key primaries in Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island...ending a streak of 12 straight wins for Barack Obama. Obama won Vermont last night. Now the candidates are focusing their attention on Pennsylvania...the next big state to grab delegates. That primary is April 22. There are also caucuses in Wyoming on Saturday and a primary March 11 in Mississippi.

Meanwhile Arizona Senator John McCain has won the Republican presidential nomination. McCain took all four states yesterday...Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Senator clinched the nomination, taking more than the required amount of delegates...he needed 1,191. An aide for his opponent, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee dropped out of the election last night. President Bush is expected to endorse McCain later today at the White House.

Israeli troops returned to Gaza yesterday...just hours after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged peace in the West Bank. Rice spoke in Ramallah yesterday, encouraging peace talks to resume between Israel and Palestine. She met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and then dined with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as fighting returned between the countries. Israel had originally halted a 5 day offensive targeting Palestinian militants on Monday. There's no word on why the fighting resumed.

Quarterback Brett Favre is saying goodbye to the Green Bay Packers. The football star is reportedly ending his 17 year long career. Favre tells ESPN he's mentally tired. The 38 year old has been named MVP three times and has set league records like most career touchdown passes. He's also had one of the best seasons of his career. The Packers general manager thanked Favre yesterday...for his years of dedication to the team.

That's all for today and tune in tomorrow for another headline update.

  • your mama birthed him!

  • Obama and Ayers conspired to bring the USA to its knees - better than bombing it. Obama had a loan for 50 million bucks to train community workers in Chicago who went to different states. The workers intimidated banks into giving loans and mortgages to black ppl who couldn't afford them and this went towards causing the economy crisis. The next president of the USA - well you warned ppl. Obama is a very evil man who doesn't wish America well.

  • Hillary keeping it real! none of this elitist speech-behind-the-podium bullshit we get from obama.

  • I never said Barack HUSSEIN Obama was a racist, Muslim. But to the majority of the free world, all three of his names are Muslim. Jeremiah Wright took care of the racist part for him! Why do we say Barack Obama, then we say Hillary Rodham Clinton? He used to display his middle name proudly in IL, why not now? Because he's trying to bamboozle America now! We aren't even supposed say HUSSEIN now. To me, he's a snakeoil salesman, nothing more. You can't bulshit a bullshiter.

  • and now HRC's even FARTHER back of OBAMA, because as of this morning, CNN is reporting that at long last the TEXAS Caucus votes have ALL been counted... and BARACK WON!

  • i'm an aussie an i think Hil is pereft.

  • you dont understand that the ohio texas ri victories was not about whos ahead. It allowed hillary to block obama from winning. It is not about who is ahead anymore it is about who will cross the line and get 2025 delegates. Neither of them are likely to, hence the mi/fl importance. Otherwise it will all be based on superdelegates.

  • No America does not owe him anything but America does not owe Hillary anything either.

He did not plagarize anything , his campaign co-chairman Deval Patrick gave him the lnes to use. They all have speech writers. So make a point trjill.

So what she tries to steal his speeches too watch the SC debates then watch the Ohio debates

  • now she wants to cheat her way into MI/FL comes August during the convention. They need to change the rules for the the benefit of the voters. Why hold a primary if a vote does not count...is it because the candidates did not campaign in those states or is it because their names were not on the ticket(MI)
