ROS - THE NEW AMATEUR RADIO DIGITAL MODE

The first contact on ROS mode took place on the 18th February 2010 between Vitoria in Spain and the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

This new mode has attracted many Radio Amateurs not only because it's a brand new mode, but also due to the fact that transmissions are perfectly readable using low power and operating under marginal propagation conditions.

On the 9th March I decided to give this new mode a try and made the first QSO from Gibraltar with WB0GKN. Since then I have managed to work a number of stations using low power (around 10 watts) to a 20 metre dipole antenna.

On this video is shown the FT-840 and sitting on top is the home made interface which is basically composed of a couple of phone-line transformers (from old dial up modems) an optocoupler IC and a few resistors and capacitors, the purpose of the interface is to isolate the rig from the PC to avoid rf feedback and ground loop problems.

Even if you don't have an amateur radio licence nor a short wave receiver you can still tune into the amateur radio bands on the webSDR receiver in the University of Twente by going to the following website:-

If you want to be able to decode ROS you will need to download the ROS software from:-

Presently I'm only active on 20 metres, however I intend to be on the other bands in the very near future.

ZB2BL.
