This fifth grade assignment was to demonstrate how the water cycle works.

First, we use a cup of water to simulate a lake, which is placed inside a second clear container, with a lamp directly on top of it (to simulate the sun). Clear Saran Wrap is placed on top of the container to catch any condensation that forms.

As time goes by, one can see the water start to evaporate and form on the sides of the container, forming clouds (condensation).

About halfway through the experiment, an ice pack is placed on top of the container, causing the temperature to drop and "rain" droplets to form and fall to the bottom of the container.

This is an excellent demonstration of the water cycle and an exploration of science terms, such as evaporation, condensation and phase changes.

Total experiment time: 5 hours.
