From November 13-15, volunteers combed the edges of San Francisco Bay for an important shorebird survey. A total 142 people in 68 teams surveyed 240 sites covering about 1.4 million acres by foot, bicycle, car, and airplane. On November 15th, I met up with two teams and took some photos and this video.
In the video, approximately 800 Willets, 200 Marbled Godwits, 36 Black-necked Stilts, 5 American Avocet, and 12 Ring-billed Gulls were hanging out in this densely packed flock. They would fly when disturbed but just came back to luxuriate in the sunshine along the bike path on Bay Farm Island along San Leandro Bay just north of the Oakland Airport.
The survey was a joint effort by the following organizations: Audubon California, Point Reyes Bird Observatory, San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
