Then why did the epistles to Timothy mention the standards for clergy involving marriage? Because, as Timothy puts it: "If a Bishop cannot manage his own household, how can he manage the Church?"
@brndurham Actually in the Latin rite it has allways bin practised, but there are 4 other rites(original probley about 20 nowadays) in the Catholic church that have a tradition of married priests. Has anyone ever heard of the eastern rites?...Why doesn't this guy go join the Maronites?
The Latin rite right from the begging has practiced celibacy, Peter ordained Linus and Clemen(both celabit men)
@richardjohnsonowns not true... there was a rabai on how to catch a predator and they can marry, many protestant ministers have molested children. I think priests should stay celibate the catholic church is about tradition and we lose more and more tradition every day, its absurd!
Celibacy should not be a requirement for the priesthood. Both celibacy and marriage fulfill the sacramental union preached by Christ. Many Catholics wish to see their priests freed from celibacy as a requirement because ultimately it is that celibacy that so many priests cannot handle so they ultimately slip into things like child abuse. much love all x
The Popes and Priests at one time used to have wives and children right up to the 12th century. And enough priests ended up with secret relationships. Enough priests ended up abusing young boys. No matter the percentage, it seems that it might be better to do as Paul said, if one can be celibate do so, but if one cannot them let him marry. Paul NEVER said that men had to be celibate to preach the word of the Lord.
@brndurham
You´re right: the Bible is very clear about it

Actually, clerical celibacy was a tradition that was only standardized by the 9th century or so, then made mandatory in the high middle ages.
