Purpose:
This experiment documents and monitors tin whisker growth on one lot of pure tin-plated multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) mounted inside a hybrid using conductive (silver) epoxy and then subjected to extensive thermal cycling followed by long term ambient storage. The experiment was initiated in 2001 by a non-NASA entity who then donated one of their test samples to NASA Goddard tin whisker researchers for continued monitoring. Details of this study and interim observations were formally published in June 2002 at the American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers (AESF) SUR/FIN conference in Chicago, IL. The paper also discusses similar but unrelated experiments by others attempting to induce whisker growth on tin-plated MLCCs.

  • ...zumal man solche Dinge ja nicht in den Mund nimmt. Oder muss man erwachsenen Menschen nun auch noch erklären, elektrische Geräte nicht in den Mund zu nehmen???

    Im ordentlichem Lötzinn gehört nach wie vor Blei und Kupfer rein. Basta!

    Was ist nun schädlicher? Das bissl Blei oder hunderte Tonnen Elektroschrott???

    Ach ja, ich vergaß, es muss ja unendliches Wachstum mit begrenzten Resourcen geschaffen werden...

  • @mker1080 this is true provided the electronic components are not stacked in layers in which traces and contacts are close enough to cause problems. The funny thing is, they will cause problems only to logical electronics that relies on mainly low current signals. Anything on the power rail side will vaporize such bridges with a high enough current. As of now, I think only lead-free solder poses the problem, rosin core on tin plated contacts seem to inhibit this.

  • Actually they're not that harmful. They can cause chaos in the right system but they can't cause a nuclear plant to "blow up".

  • yeah a nuclear plant could blow up b/c of these lil bastards (the tin whiskers) I bet they have their most important circuits encased in some sort of hard resin to combat this or maybe backup after backup system. power plants have to have all that I bet. movies like atomic twister are another example.

  • im worried about all my gadgets dying b/c of this. I have stuff like my ipod my PSP and my computer and my awesome Skinny PS2. the smaller things get the more risk of tin whiskers. would it be possible to somwehow remove them like by brushing the parts with the power off and while its humib to combat static or will that hurt it? and then blow it all out like the dust and close it back up.yeah aircraft, power plants imagine a nuclear plant going up b/c of this, whos laffin now envoronmentalists.

  • so this is caused by heating and cooling of solder on components? so if i leave my computer on will it reduce this? also is it possible to stop this?
