This is a sample of manual notching of a Tsunami 567 EMD decoder on an HO LifeLike SD9.

Here, with the throttle speed at zero, I manually notch up one. The real loco would load up, and just begin to pull on the string of cars, but would not move the cars except to pull out any slack.

Then I set the throttle speed to 1, where the model loco just starts moving.

Then I manually notch up three steps, simulating the real loco notching up to develop enough power to begin moving the string of cars.

Then I set the throttle speed to 5 or 6, enough to move the cars at yard speed. I have some momentum set for both accel and decal so the speed changes smoothly. Tough to see here due to the choppiness of the video.

You can hear the transition step where the sound revs drop, then pick back up. In real life, this is where the loco would change the series/parallel wiring of the traction motors by dropping the speed, flipping traction motor relays, then re-applying power. This happened automatically and was necessary because of the limited power range of early main generators. It was not something the engineer had to do.

Different models had different transition steps. Later models and modifications did away with transition altogether. This decoder has a one-size-fits-all.

  • If you buy the Blue Line, get it without sound, then put in a Tsunami EMD 567 and speaker. At this point, the only realistic sound is from Tsunami, or possibly LokSound. My diesel here is from the original Life Like P2K run from some years back. I modified the frame to accommodate the Tsunami board and speaker. The speaker resides under the radiator deck.

  • somebody finally got it right...!!!! good job!!

  • Thanks - comes from watching AND running the real ones!

  • Could You Explain More on how you Got the Notching together? I have a NCE and All my Trains just start up fast or when i turn momentum on Start off going about 3SMPH instead of starting smoothly from a stand still

  • Check the Soundrax Diesel users manual. CV3 and 4 must be set to 20 or so for Accel, Decel delay. CV116 must be set to 0 for Manual Notching. Use F9 to increase engine revs, F10 to decrease revs.

Real diesels rev up or down ahead of accelerating or decelerating. With the speed at zero, Hit F9 3-4 times, then move the speed to 15 or 20. When the loco reaches speed, Hit F10 once or twice to drop the revs back down, unless you are pulling a heavy string of cars.

  • Very impressive!! Really captures that 567 lumpy sound! I was going to get Digitraz, but this one sold me on Tsunami!!! :-)

  • I see blue line has a SD9 coming out in April next month.. I won't buy one unless it has the real sound like this one? Or I can hear it first? Somebody had one on youtube and its wayyyy off once again! What maker is this engine you have? That's awesome sounding!!!
