Terry Turley sings "Stay Off the Sidewalk" with Tom "Tarpaper Shack/Guitarface" Marshalek on fiddle and backing vocals by Layla Purtlebaugh. World's Greatest? Hey, my friend Terry wrote it and sings it, and I'm a big fan. -Tom
For anyone who's curious, here's a little lesson with my approach to the fiddle when I'm trying to be more "country" or "bluegrass". Start with the major pentatonic (5 note) scale. This song's in G, so the scale is G A B D E. Throw in the flatted 3rd, Bb for some color, especially when ascending. This makes it a "bluegrass" scale. Also don't be afraid to slide into a note, especially at the beginning of a phrase or going from the second to the third (A to B). Try to start and end phrases on a chord tone. Better yet, try to hear where your fiddle wants to go. And my favorite piece of advice for fiddling or any kind of improvisation, if you make a mistake, play the mistake again like you must have meant it in the first place. ;)
