When I heard Yvette Landry's mournful vocals framed by Anya Burgess' lonesome fiddle on the Catins' beautiful rendition of this classic song, it gave me le gros coeur (big heart) and brought a lump to my throat. Alex Broussard, who composed and originally recorded this song, would be very proud of the Catins' version. The song tells of the day Broussard's mother died, leaving her 9-year-old son an orphan on this earth.
Had I known the Catins were about to play it, I would have started the recorder sooner. It's good I didn't because now we have a reason to buy Bonsoir Catin's upcoming CD. I'll have to get two copies because I'll wear out this track on one of them.
This performance took place on the back porch of the Larose Civic Center on 9 May 2009 at Festival du Coeur de Lafourche (Heart of Lafourche Festival).
