gentle on my mind
jOHN hARTFORD

(G)Its knowing that your door is always (G7)open
and you path is (G) free to (Am) walk
That makes me tend to keep my sleeping bag (Am7) rolled up
and stashed (D7) behind your (G) couch
And its knowing I'm not shackled by forgotten words and bonds (G7)
or the ink stains that have (G) dried if on some (Am) line
That keeps you in the backroads by the (Am7) river of my memory
that keeps you ever (D7) gentle on my (G) mind

Its not clinging to the rock and ivy planted on the column
now that binds me
Or something that somebody said because they thought
we fit together walkin
Its just knowin that the world will not be cursin or forgivin
as I walk along some railroad track and find
That you are moving on the backroads by the riveres of my memory
that keeps you ever gentle on my mind

Tho the wheatfields and the clothelines and junkyards
and the highways come between us
And some other woman cryin to her mother cause she turned
and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy may stain my face
and the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin on the backroads
by the rivers flowing gentle on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin cracklin cauldron
in some train yard
My beard a roughn'n coal pile and a dirty hat
pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands round a tin can
I pretend to pull you to my breast and find
That you are wavin on the backroads by the rivers of my memory
Ever gentle you are gentle on my mind

  • nevermind playing it faster just play it with more feeling. However you do it it still sounds pretty damn good. Thanks for posting this, cause i have been thinking of covering this one myself.

  • @wba731 grateful for your feedback. Sometimes I think I get lost in a mellow Muzak approach. If anything surfaces again I'll let you know. Good luck. If you cover it send it don't hesitate to send it to me.

  • Like the guitar playing better than the singing.

Both - excellent, however. Thanks for sharing!

  • @JosieGirl1000 twice as good cuz ther are 12 strings.lol.

  • @RMelancholy too kind:-)

  • My, my - Don McLean, channels through you in your version here, my friend.

  • not bad, a little slow, but sounds and looks like you're still working on the chord progressions (don't worry, sounds a lot better than mine! and I play a 12-string also)

But very well done, keep workin it and repost another version soon.

  • @craigdawson2
