will i lose my save data if i change the RaM

@XZMDragon Nope, your RAM only contains data while your machine is powered on. You have to completely shut down your machine in order to swap out the RAM. Your data will normally be saved to your hard disk. Before doing this yourself you will want to understand well the difference between RAM and a hard disk though.
Still a good idea to perform a backup before you swap out the memory though just in case.

@jayjaydeecreative your 1GB of memory is likely 2 512MB sticks. You'll need to replace them with 2 2GB sticks to get to 4GB.

what model of ram did you buy?

@randomvideoman87 I bought the RAM from OWC, used their site to match it up with my model / mfgr date.

I switched out 2 512 modules with 2 new 1024 modules. everything seems okay. system rebooted just fine. I checked the "about this Mac", but the RAM is still listed as 1 GB. Does this mean that I didn't get both modules seated properly?

@odaward that's most likely the reason. Make sure the connectors on the edge of the memory sticks are clean before you reseat them; sometimes fingers can leave an oily residue that can cause a problem.
