@youngian I couldn't have put it better myself, and I'm a Brit too. This was different from the usual nonsense shows that have come out, and set a standard for drama tv. I'm not even ashamed to say I was addicted to this show for a good few years, even after it was finished and watched episodes on repeat.
HBO has put out many good shows, namely Oz, The Wire, The Sopranos, but I doubt there will be another show as gritty as this!

Oz was the first series I saw when I realised something great was happening with American TV. No goodies and baddies or spoon fed melodrama. Classy character actors instead of star vehicles. It got a bit batty towards the end but no-network US TV has never looked back.
From an appreciated Brit who country had forgot how great TV could be.
