The piece takes over 21 minutes which is about the duration of Ades' another one-movement work, the collosal Tevot for orchestra, and yet the form is very concise and intact. This is probably the greatest achievement of the English composer in this work. My admiration...
@FlorestanEusebius1 Ligeti`s scores are indeed hugely complex and detailed but the score for this Ades piece is less immediately straightforward to grasp-perhaps it looks more complcated than it sounds. I know excatly what utahcimbalkom is talking about.
Brilliant piece. I don't know about Ligeti so much, but I can certainly hear Ives in there. Not just in terms of the rhythmic complexity - the harmony and the folkish themes too.
That is a very difficult rhythmic composition, which uses polyrhythm with the barlines and time signature not coinciding. Sometimes it reminds me of Ligeti, who achieved the same result, but without such complicated score.
Eric Byers is hot.

A collection of variations built as a kind of fugue. Or perhaps the other way around. 8^)
Excellent achievement and a unique idea.

Thank you for suggestion, I will look at Ligeti's concerto.

Are you kidding me? Some Ligeti scores are hugely complex. Look at the piano concerto
