Dedication of the portion of the Swedish Immigrant Trail at Shafer, MN

The Shafer segment of the Swedish Immigrant Trail opened October 6th, with local flair. Swedish flags lined the entrance to the new two-mile multi-use paved trail as state legislators, local officials, volunteers, and community members walked and bicycled the first completed non-urban segment of the planned twenty-mile trail. Following an abandoned railroad line past wetlands, farms, and a bison ranch the trail will link six communities in a rapidly growing Chisago County. The area was the setting for Vilhelm Moberg's internationally known "The Emigrants" book series: Moberg himself spent many months researching Swedish immigrant family histories, traveling much of the area by bicycle.

National Park Service Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program staff provided trail planning assistance to the Chisago County Parks and Trails Foundation (PTF) and the Chisago County Parks Department (CCPD) for this project, as well as helping secure Challenge Cost Share funding for wetland delineation. Other key partners and funders included: the City of Shafer, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the several landowners who donated or sold land to the County for the trail. PTF and CCPD volunteers have logged countless hours in planning, fundraising, acquisition, and development for the past 10 years to finally be able to see local children and adults enjoy the new outdoor recreation facility. The partnership continues to work together to develop the rest of the trail.

    greets from a Swede

  • The guy at 1:29-2:12 must be of swedish origin. The way he looks: tall, blond. The way he acts, he´s slightly leaning backwards while swaying, keeps both his hands together behind his back. Typical swedish behaviour.
