Playing my McSpadden -- quickly, angrily and with all the nuance of a jackhammer -- after pulling a frustrating all-nighter to finish a publishing project full of finely polished lies. A freelance journalist's nightmare: Barely ethical work that pays badly.

So, it was either take it out on the dulcimer or start smashing furniture.

Captured on a cheap mobile phone camera. Apologies to Jean Ritchie.

  • omg where is the tab for that? i have a dulcimer that is hourglass shaped and it's made from purple mahogany (i guess im bragging a little) and i would love to learn that song

  • @MrJamestheanimal I don't/can't use tabs (never really learnt to read music well), but Shady Grove should be pretty easy to find. I'm using a capo on fret 1, but it can also be played without a capo by downtuning the melody strings a step from DAD to DAC (or CGB-flat, if you want to match the tuning in Jean Ritchie's famous rendition).

  • Never thought you could use the term "bad-ass" to complement something as sweet and backwoodsy as a dulcimer . . . . but wow, that is bad-ass!!!
