The wonderful Russian soprano, Galina Vishnevskaya, sings Liu's first aria from Act I of Puccini's Turandot. Recorded live at La Scala in 1964 with Birgit Nilsson, Franco Corelli, and Nicola Zaccaria, conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni

  • Sometimes I think she was the best Liù ever. I get in doubt because so many marvelous singers have done that part, but for sheer vocal beauty, allied to extreme but tasteful expressivity, it's possible that Vishnevskaya is at least the equal of Tebaldi (who nonetheless never sang the role on stage), Moffo, Price, etc. Her ability to produce a very youthful sound without losing her vocal heft and richness was remarkable.
