I don't think you understand what he is saying. Greatness is relative. We are capable of being great in comparison to what we are now, would you not agree? Assuming there are far more advanced civilizations out there, which I feel safe doing, it is not unreasonable to think that humans are capable of reaching that level of greatness as well. Whether or not we tear ourselves apart before then is yet to be seen but we are still capable. Arrogance and Carl Sagan are two things that don't mix well.

Every time I listen to this it awakes this strong, almost indescribable, longing for space. The feeling that I need to leave this planet and venture into space simply because I am not there yet.

Steal from the Earth? Oh, you mean we use the resources in our surrounding environment, just like every other species that wants to survive.

Carl Sagan was the last person to say that we are the center of the universe. He only meant to say that despite our perceived flaws and failures we are capable of greatness. Despite our faults, we humans are capable of reaching a future worth living. Despite our limitations, we humans are capable of progress and striving higher, we are capable of doing what is right and what is favorable to the best interests and general will of our species.
