*Dr Iain McGilchrist*, author of "The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and The Making of the Western World", puts our society on the couch. He suggests that the bipartite structure of the brain helps us to understand why the world so often seems paradoxical, and why we so often end up achieving the opposite of what we intend.

  • Iain McGilchrist is one of the foremost experts on human awareness, it's various modes, its dysfunctions as well as pointing to the possibility of developing a skill in modulating awareness to balance our capacities into a more effective whole in the service of our planet in this time of planetary decline.

This skill cannot be taught directly since by definition it must include awareness that is denied by the left...

  • I agree with just about everything I heard

  • I have great respect for McGilchrist but I strongly disagree with what he says about Dawkins's view of religious indoctrination of children. McGilchrist's opinion is that religious ideas are drummed out in the education - that's correct , but the children of muslims don't have other "education" than that which is written in the Quran. The point is that the pupils are not given any other source of knowledge but the Quran - thus they don't have a base for comparison and are deprived of other views

  • Life is all about relationships, that is what you said. You are right. Now think for a moment: How are you related to other people? You work for money. Money is a mechanical way of solving social problems and ordering relationships. This has lead to a mechanical world. This is the 'left brain world' you are talking about. Now think: What is your role in this? Look at yourself and your privileged position as a psychiatrist in society.
