Yes Arragal had nerves that caused him to suffer. Corelli also was nervous but fine once he started to sing. A friend of mine my age sang at the met. in the Chorus long ago and said Corelli used a moist sponge to keep his mouth from being too dry. Sometimes they had to almost push him out on stage when he was nervous but once out on stage and singing he was fine.

The fast Vibrato he had was fine. I was never a fan of Bonci with his vibrato . His Ballo aria laughing and singing was excellent . Toscanini told Peerce to study that recording before he sang the aria on the live 1954 Radio Ballo Brdcst. It's on CD with Peerce Merrill and Nelli. Toscanini cond. The great NBC orchestra, the Maestro picked himself. Jan told me he did study the way Bonci sang it and agreed about it with Tosc. who had wanted Bjorling, but JB canceled the Ballo with the Maestro

I do not think that even Pavarotti would deny that Lauri-Volpi came further in voice than he did, but they are both exceedingly fine tenors nonetheless and worthy of the attention given them.

@65attila I agree with Pavarotti. Arragal has a truly beautiful quality of voice. He also uses his mezza voce& does very well with nuances. I read that he suffered from stage fright. I don't know how accurate that is.Bob

I heard Arragal on stage in Esclarmaonde with Sutherland and his voice overwhelmed me. In an interview
on YT Pavarotti says when he was coming up there were rwo other newbies Domingo and Arragal. And in
a bit of candor . and humility he said "Arragal was the best of us". I met Pavim 1975 - he was a humble and delightful person.

I have strong opinions about music and food and in my background and I think yours too
- they are part of life and usually end with a good laugh and/or meal. I have great respect for
your opinions and civility. There is "Singers II' Thread on the Amazon Classical Music Forum where
I post. It is great for exchanging ideas . I hope you have the time and inclination to vist. ,
With kindest regards and respect- John

@65attila I have some tolerance for old recordings, but I would think that The Merli recordings would be of better quality, more so like the Gigli recordings, since they were both very close in age. Even though we had differences of opinion, I still found your comments kind of interesting.Bob.Enjoy

I have much tolerance for old sound as my first opera listening was to
Caruso et al on worn 78 rpms. I have 4 complete operas with Merli and 2 recital
discs on Preiser and am happy with them.
Ciao-John. I am an American of Sicilian decent;-)

@65attila I like Merli very much, but it's difficult to find recordings that are in good condtion. Being of Italian decent&speaking the language,I must say I have a Siren in my brain which prefers Italian tenors,Although I do enjoy many other singers of different Nationalities, like Cortis,Wunderlich,Tucker ,Bjorling& Tauber.
Don't forget, the faster vibrato was the style in past times. But I wouldn't change a thing. Sounds perfect to me! What a thrill to see and hear this video!
