Rembrandt's technique is not such a mystery. It evolved over time but it is not much of a mystery if you allow yourself time to paint broadly then glaze, over which more broad stokes are painted and then more glazing to knock down areas which needed subduing. He painted thick and then transparently this gave depth. He worked over and over until he achieved the desired effect he sought.
