I am a Witness of Corporate Greed and Monumental Stupidity A short view about the controversial case of the sale of NBPower to HydroQuebec. by.ALO-SANZ
Low power costs is one of those advantages. Businesses are not evil. They are an essential component of our society and provide comfortable living incomes to most of the citizens of this province. Demonizing business is destructive and nasty way to conduct this debate.
Furthermore, now that the world has passed the point of "peak oil", the following decades will see a massive increase in power rates for jurisdictions that rely on fossil-fuel electrical generation plants (like NB!). Considering that some places around the world pay their workers slave labour wages and can therefore afford to produce products at a fraction of the price of Canadian industries, it is important to give our businesses as many other advantages as possible.
It is incorrect and misleading to describe the lower industrial power rates under the deal as a "bailout" and it is also misleading to describe NB power's current industrial rates as "competitive". NB industrial rates (and residential rates) are not competitive with jurisdictions in Canada (e.g. NFLD, Quebec, Manitoba, and BC) which have abundant supplies of hydroelectric generating capacity.
I disagree. This is a good deal for New Brunswick. There is nothing wrong with a deal in which all parties (HQ, NB citizens, NB business, the NB government, and most importantly the NB environment) reap benefits.
