The tune to this song was not actually written by Henry the Eighth as it is oft' said, since the style of the tune came to England after his time. The lyrics, however, are possibly written by him and refer to his love of Anne Boleyn. Anyhow, it certainly captures the emotions well.

As usual, constructive criticisms, especially of my tin whistling, welcomed.

Dedicated to a good comrade of Medici descent.

Lyrics
Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
Delighting in your company.

Chorus:
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady greensleeves.

Your vows you've broken, like my heart,
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity.

chorus

I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.

chorus

If you intend thus to disdain,
It does the more enrapture me,
And even so, I still remain
A lover in captivity.

chorus

My men were clothed all in green,
And they did ever wait on thee;
All this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

chorus

Thou couldst desire no earthly thing,
but still thou hadst it readily.
Thy music still to play and sing;
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

chorus

Well, I will pray to God on high,
that thou my constancy mayst see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.

chorus

Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

  • You're tonguing way too hard and it needs to flow a little better... try not to be so rigid. Other than that just practice so you don't slip up the notes and such.

  • @lillidys Thank you for the advice. I will remember it when practicing :)

  • that is such a shit

  • The comment "that is such shit" is hardly constructive and rather grammatically off. Either point out what wrong with the music or shut up.

  • "who's a good comrade of medici descent"? :O

and i do enjoy this song, though i don't think we can sing the whole song in48 seconds ;)

  • To answer your first question, no one you would know.

As to your second point, we are no suppose to be able to sing the entire song in 48 seconds. I thought it would be rather dull if I played the same tune over and over. One can sing the first verse and chorus in 48 sec.

  • I think if you would find a nice and windy place outside (Ireland would be neat =3) and play that a little slower with more feeling... That would be awesome.

  • put some emotion into it man, the notes don't have to be dead on... i notice how you disconnect all the notes... connect them! it will sound a lot better! you have great Potential, defiantly keep playing though!

  • does anyone no the actual notes for this..?

  • You suck at playing tin whistle. I mean, that was crap.

  • Oh I do love this melody.

I think you are a quite good musician, even if there are some imperfections in your performance. Keep on practise and you will improve a lot. =)

  • Great job!!! I love the dedication. :)
