Members and Freinds of the United States Deaf Community,

At San Diego State University the School (Department) of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is cutting the fast growing and exciting ASL-Deaf Studies program from 11 ASL I class sections down to only one class section last fall semester and again this spring semester. Also, from 10 ASL faculty members down to only 4 this spring semester. Last academic year we had over 850 students enrolled in ASL class sections from different majors on the campus. Now our ASL classes are limited to only those students who major in speech pathology or audiology,

The California State University System accepts ASL for language requirements - 12 units. SDSU students are eligible for ASL as their optional language requirement. Blocking them from taking credit ASL courses at SDSU is morally wrong and improper.

This coming fall there will be no fulltime lecturer-coordinator and almost none faculty members. Made an excellent ASL-Deaf Studies minor proposal but it was tabled indefinitely. Students who are not majoring is SLHS are shut off from all ASL language courses for kanguage credit in 2009-2010. According to a recent survey members of the Deaf Community strongly support the concept of offering ASL and Deaf Studies courses under a department of linguistics, a department of deaf studies or foreign languages. Right now the SDSU Students Association is proposing a resolution demanding that ASL and Deaf Studies be kept open to any interested students at SDSU. In addition, the resolution includes a proposal that ASL and Deaf Studies be placed under the Department of Linguistics within the College of Arts and Letters on the campus. When the resolution is approved by the SDSU Students Council, it will be brought to the University Faculty Senate in the near future.

Members and friends of the United States deaf community are urged to send a letter of support for ASL and Deaf Studies to the SDSU President and Provost as soon as possible.

ASL Club and the SDSU Students Association want to thank you for support and encouragement with great appreciation.

  • Thank-you for posting this. I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I was in the last graduating class at SDSU (MA/credential program in Education of the Deaf, 2006) before the program was shut-down. I'm beginning to feel like I'm an alumni to a ghost school.

I would like to write a letter expressing my concerns to the college. Any suggestions as to whom I should address it to? Thanks again.

  • Id the deaf community wants to be a strong force to protect their language, theyd have to start respecting true deaf leaders like me instead of creating puppets to butter up as leaders. I been pushing for changes and this a side effect you're seeing from my work. There's a thing called Weed and Seed and thats what's happening. Weed out the old deaf guards and seed their places with new deaf generations.
