When Natz Peters (60) lost control of his Grand National car coming off Daytona's Calamity Corner, he first struck the inside wall, then bounced back onto the race track into the path of Jim Hurlbert. Some observers on the scene told SCR that Hurlbert never cracked the throttle. When he hit Peters' car, the impact was tremendous. The fuel cell split open precipitating a tremendous fire. The heat was so great that photographers on the roof of the granstand some three stories away felt their eyebrows singe. Peters escaped with minor burns but Hurlbert suffered a badly broken leg, broken jaw, broken teeth, burns on his arm and serious facial cuts.

  • This crash was the last one involving that ridiculoulsy head-in-ass designed turn 4 inside wall. I guess the track owners and NASCAR had seen enough carnage there. When the drivers returned for the July race they all breathed a collective sigh of relief when they looked at the redesigned turn 4. • One of the most brutal racing crashes I have ever seen.

    Thanks for UL'ing!

  • What was a consolation race? Was it for the guys who didn't make it into the 500?

  • too bad they didn't have HD in '84... lol

  • 1984 and the years around that had terrible wrecks at daytona in that inside wall. Rudd ,Lajoie, Finney, Waltrip and this.
