In this excerpt from Charles Everett Pace's dramatic portrayal, Frederick Douglass tells his white audience that he cannot share their joy in the celebration of Independence Day.

This was recorded at the 2004 Bleeding Kansas Chautauqua, sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, June 25, 2004, in Lawrence, Kansas.

  • Not bad, Charles, but still you're too cute with the reading! You seem too slick with the reading, not savoring each word, not realizing the terrific import of each word! HOWEVER, I WILL SAY THIS: YOU'RE A BIT BETTER THAN james earl jones who betrays the fact he understands utterly nothing about this speech! Back to school for the both of you...Sorry, Charles...a good try...regards, guess who...

  • We have no dam bizz celebrate the slave massa days and dam way

  • 1 dislike? Is that you, Charles Aycock?

  • Pay attention to the words not the attire!

  • @jsektc You still don't understand it.

  • give it up white people are the minority now forget that slavery shit i think 100 years of being on welfare and all the benifits from our government should be more than enough if you guys dont like it here we should pay for a one way ticket to Angolo where your black brothers sold you to some white redneck im not rascist but when you keep peeling an old wound it gets infected and people like you are a disease learn to forget your great -great granparents might of suffered just like everyone

  • @jsektc You speak like someone who truly does not know the true history of this country. It's a shame.

  • can we hear him do the whole speech. Fred was on poing it is a shame that most negros have no sense of historical gographical reference and will celebrate a lynching even it a negro is the guest of honor. riddle me this whag is a NIGGER!

  • Great Job !!!

  • It's still fine to celebrate the 4th of july, and what we can't do is to forget that we are not celebrating man, but the principles, regardless that they were poorly enforced and damaged by man.
