@fishtanksandponds we did sedation before to cut a piece of bone which stuck out of the fish mouth after he crashed against some rocks. if i had known iodine is so effective, i would not have chosen to use pp.

Hi i just want to know how do you slow down or prevent too much algae from growing in the pond making the water too green

i wish i was a fish

@MegaFilthyMcnasty oh, so you can see it on the fish as opposed to a human? the only reason I am interested is because I am a tropical fish keeper (neons, guppies, etc) and I've had to wrestle with different illnesses a couple times.

How long was the koi out of the water for? how did it get it's oxygen? Awesome koi collection! I love kois, I have 4 small ones right now, hopefully I can get a pond before they get too big!

@YanmingYuMusic The koi was out of water for just a few minutes. They can live unharmed for quite a bit longer if need be if they are handled properly. It is better to work to a plan and finish what needs to be done rather than rush and have to repeat the process.

how many times did you do this treatment?

@chanzhijia Just a single treatment is all that was needed. Apart from the ulcer the fish was in very good shape and so protecting the wound from secondary infections until healing started was enough. The fish made a full recovery and there is no sign of scaring or anything now.

@fishtanksandponds my treatment is isolating the fish into a potassium permanganate bath. 3hrs, reduce 25% and topup with fresh water. I'm wondering if i need to do this everyday for 5 days. I think it is not as immediate as topical application.

@chanzhijia Your treatment will work provided that the water you are treating the Koi in is very clean. If it is rich in organic chemicalst then the PP will quickly turn brown instead of being purple and once that has happend it is useless as a treatment.
If you decide to change the treatment to a topical iodine prep, then make sure that you sedate the Koi because they are strong slippery fish (as you probably know and there is a big risk of further injury.
Good luck with it.
